Arizona Youth Leadership Summit 2012

WHO:   Last September, every public, private and charter high school in Arizona was invited to nominate their top "outstanding" sophomore to attend the HOBY premier leadership program. Students are chosen through their demonstrated leadership potential, a formal leadership essay, an application and final approval by their school administrators.

WHAT:   The "Summit" is a 4-day leadership program that combines hands-on leadership, teambuilding activities, community service projects, and positive social activities to help students learn essential leadership skills for success in business and life. The program focuses on three primary areas: (1) leadership of self, (2) leadership in a group, and (3) leadership for society.

WHERE:   On the Campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona

WHEN:   June 7th-10th, 2012

WHY:   Now more than ever, it's essential for young people to step into their potentials as future leaders and good individual contributors.

  • Every eight seconds a student will drop out of high school in the United States. The training we provide, teaches young adults to be positive role models and mentors to many potentially at-risk students.
  • Service-learning programs are not components of high school curriculums, despite being proven to increase student awareness of community needs and their belief that they can make a difference.
  • High school students participating in service-oriented programs have higher test scores and are less likely to drop out of school or engage in at-risk behavior.

HOW:   Through the generous donations of corporate, civic and private scholarships, this premier leadership program is offered to students at no cost to them. The "Arizona Youth Leadership Summit 2012" is hosted by HOBY Arizona, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run entirely by Arizona business professionals who volunteer their time and resources.

Who benefits from HOBY?

  • The Local Community: HOBY alumni return to their own communities and apply all the skills and ideas they learned at the program. Community organizations, such as senior centers, schools, churches, hospitals and more, count on HOBY “ambassadors” to continue the tradition of service that other HOBY alumni began.
  • The Students: HOBY “ambassadors” learn how to become community leaders and realize their full potential. Additionally, studies show that students participating in civic service decrease their chances of dropping out of school and prevent at-risk behavior.
  • The Business Community: HOBY alumni are outstanding individuals who grow into employees of exemplary character with a pension for high performance and collaboration with others. Given the choice between a HOBY alumni and a non-HOBY applicant, hiring managers would choose the HOBY resume every time.
