HOBY Arizona SeminarsEach year, in collaboration with HOBY International, HOBY Arizona hosts an annual leadership seminar for Arizona's outstanding sophomores. Each accredited public and private high school in Arizona receives a formal invitation to select their sophomore representative in September. From September through November, high schools conduct selection processes to detemine who their HOBY Arizona Ambassador will be. The annual seminar is conducted in June at the Arizona State University Tempe Campus. Students are provided university housing during the 3 1/2 day seminar, which focuses on developing leadership in the areas of civics, free enterprise, and volunteerism. Through various panel discussions, mock legislative, business, and judicial proceedings, students experience real world applications of what many will choose as career paths someday. Reflection activites are hosted throughout the conference by our volunteers, many who are alumni of the HOBY program. The cost of conducting the seminar is approximately $400 per student. More than half of these costs are raised through grants and fundraising activities. Most high schools pay a $150 registration fee, though there is a limited pool of scholarships available to high schools experiencing extreme financial difficulties.
