GFWC History

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs, one of the world’s largest and oldest nonpartisan, nondenominational, women’s volunteer service organizations, was founded in 1890 and chartered by the 56th United States Congress in 1901. Headquartered in a National Historic Landmark building in Washington, D.C., GFWC has a long history of philanthropy, social and political advocacy, and community leadership. More than 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries work in their own communities to support the arts, preserve natural resources, advance education, promote healthy lifestyles, encourage civic involvement, and work toward world peace and understanding. In 2006, GFWC and its members raised nearly $32 million on behalf of more than 230,000 projects, and volunteered more than 8.4 million hours.

GFWC-AZ History

Arizona women’s clubs belonged to the Arizona Federation of Women’s Clubs beginning in 1901 when the General Federation of Women’s Clubs came to the Arizona Territory. Many of these clubs were established prior to 1901 and are still in existence. These pioneer clubs include the GFWC Florence Woman’s Club (1876), the GFWC Monday Club of Prescott, (1895), the GFWC Tucson Woman’s Club (1894), the GFWC Woman’s Club of Phoenix (1900), and the GFWC Bisbee Woman’s Club(1899). Today, GFWC-Arizona has 45 clubs across the state, all actively promoting the programs and projects of GFWC. Our state headquarters is located at 200 N MacDonald. Mesa, AZ and is a National Historic Landmark.
